Port access basics: TWIC and UIIA for drayage
Two credentials that commonly come up when hiring a port drayage carrier: TWIC for secure terminal access and UIIA for equipment interchange.
What credentials does a drayage carrier need to pick up at a port?
Drivers needing unescorted access to secure areas of regulated maritime facilities need a TSA-issued TWIC. Most container equipment interchange in the US runs under the UIIA, so carriers typically participate in it to take ocean-carrier equipment. Individual terminals may have additional requirements.
TWIC
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential is issued by TSA and is required for unescorted access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels regulated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act.
UIIA
The Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement, administered by the Intermodal Association of North America, is the standard agreement governing interchange of intermodal equipment between equipment providers and motor carriers.
Confirm terminal-specific rules
Terminals and ocean carriers can set their own appointment, registration and equipment rules. Confirm current requirements with the terminal before dispatch.
