How to check a trucking company's USDOT and MC number
What USDOT numbers and MC operating authority mean, and how to check a drayage carrier's registration using FMCSA's public tools.
How do I verify a drayage carrier's USDOT and MC number?
Enter the USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot. Confirm the legal name matches, the USDOT status is active, and the company holds authorized for-hire operating authority for the freight you are tendering.
USDOT number
FMCSA assigns USDOT numbers to identify commercial motor vehicle operators. Companies operating commercial vehicles in interstate commerce that meet FMCSA thresholds must register.
MC number and operating authority
For-hire carriers moving regulated freight in interstate commerce generally need operating authority from FMCSA, identified by an MC docket number, in addition to a USDOT number.
What a registration check does not tell you
A federal registration record shows legal status. It does not show which ports a company serves, its service quality, or current truck availability. On Dray Day, FMCSA checks, insurance, ownership and regional coverage are separate statuses, each shown with the date of the last successful check.
